The castle
Ballynahinch Castle is a former Irish country house. It stands on the site of an older castle and now operates as a luxury hotel. The property sits in a private estate in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland.
The building lies right on the edge of Ballynahinch Lake and the Ballynahinch River. Benlettery, at 557 metres, looms directly above it. This peak is part of the Twelve Bens mountain range. The view is the main draw: the lake out front, the river cutting through the grounds, and quartzite peaks rising straight from the water. Walking around the lake is the best way to see all of it.
The house and its history
The detached three-storey house dates from 1754. It has been modified over the years, yet the structure retains its architectural integrity.
Visitors usually come for the estate country itself. The lake, the river, and the grounds form the core of the experience. The walk from the castle down to the water and back is the standard route.
The residents
Richard Martin lived here. Known as “Humanity Dick” (1754–1834), he was a Member of Parliament for County Galway. He founded the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the organization named after him.
Later, the Maharaja Jam Sahib owned the estate. This Indian prince held the property in the 20th century. His ownership stretches the castle's story from the Irish country house era into the colonial period and back. The residents form the second history of the place: the MP, the prince, and the hotel that keeps the house standing today.

The castle is in the Connemara region of County Galway. It is a drive from both Galway city and Clifden. The lake and river are at the castle's edge, with Benlettery dominating the view.
