Clooney More

Clooney More is a fragile, partially private headland on Sligo Bay's north coast. This page details the surf break and responsible access methods, but deliberately withholds precise map coordinates to protect the habitat.

Why this page is different

Clooney More sits on the north coast of Sligo Bay. It is one of the most recognised surf breaks in Ireland. We have intentionally left out a precise map pin for this location.

The dunes and headland form a fragile ecosystem. Much of the surrounding land is private. Local surfers and landowners have requested that the site not be over-exposed. We respect that request. This page explains what the place is and how to respect it. It does not provide a navigation route to the water.

What it is

The headland is low, covered in grass and dune. A long, shallow bay lies to the south. The open Atlantic faces the north. Waves arrive from the west and break over a gently shelving sand bottom. That specific combination gives the spot its national reputation.

Standing on the headland offers a clear view of the sea. Looking across Sligo Bay, you can see the mountains of Connemara. Many consider this one of the best views in the county.

How to enjoy it responsibly

The public road offers a clear view of the headland. For non-locals, that is the appropriate way to see it. If you are a surfer or want to get closer, ask a local first. A shop in the village or a surf shop in Sligo can guide you. Do not drive off the road or cross land you do not own.

Keep dogs on a lead. Do not cross fences. Avoid parking off-road. Leave the dunes untouched.

Practical

Viewing from the road is free. There is no formal car park at the headland. The land is not entirely public. If you plan to surf, check with a local source before heading out.
