Mweelrea

The highest mountain in Connacht (814 m), on the Atlantic coast of County Mayo above Killary Harbour — a horseshoe of peaks and a full day’s walk for the view that earns the province’s summit.

The mountain

Mweelrea is a mountain on the Atlantic coast of County Mayo, rising to 814 metres and making it the highest in the province of Connacht. It overlooks Killary Harbour and sits at the heart of a horseshoe-shaped massif that includes the peaks of Ben Lugmore and Ben Bury; the whole group is known as the Mweelrea Mountains. The south-east face of the mountain is a series of cliffed corries, and the view from the top — the harbour, the sea, and the long line of the Mayo coast — is the reason for the climb.

The walk

The standard approach is from the Killorglin side, a long climb out of the village and up over the open ground to the top, and it is a full day: the distance is not the whole story; the open ground and the weather are. The mountain is exposed, and the weather on the top can be a long way from the weather in the valley; in a storm the corries and the ridge are closed country.

What makes it different

It is the highest point in the province, and that is what sets it apart from the other western mountains: the view is not of the sea from a cliff, but of the whole coast from above it — the harbour below, the islands in it, and the line of the land to the north and south. It is the kind of mountain climbed once and thought about afterwards.
