The village
Dooagh (Dumha Acha in Irish) is a village located on Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland. It is best known for the nearby Keem Bay, a Blue Flag beach — the bay that is the village’s reason for being, and the walk that gets done out of the village. Dooagh sits on the west of Achill, on the R319 regional road, and it is the village between the bay and the rest of the island.
The beach that came back
Between May 2017 and January 2019, Dooagh beach had 300 metres (1,000 ft) of golden sand. Previously, the sand was completely washed away in a storm in 1984, leaving a rocky foreshore that remained until the sand was restored by an unusually high tide in April 2017. The new sandy beach was reported as causing an increase in tourism to the village. Dooagh beach washed away for a second time in early 2019 — the beach is the Atlantic’s to give and take, and the village has learned to live with that.
Getting around
Dooagh is located on the R319 regional road, and Bus Éireann route 450 (Dooagh—Keel—Westport—Murrisk—Louisburgh) serves the village six times daily on weekdays, three times on Sundays, with connections to Ireland West Airport and Dublin available at Westport. The nearest rail services are at Westport railway station, 62 km away. The bus is the village’s connection: the road, the bus and the connection to the airport, and the village is the place where the west of Achill meets the road.
Practical
Dooagh is on the R319 on the west of Achill, a drive from Westport; Keem Bay is a short walk from the village. The village works as the base for the west coast of Achill — the bay in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and the village in between.
