Gougane Barra does not shout. It is a attraction in Co. Cork that rewards the extra hour, and this is what we know about it right now.

Gougane Barra sits on a hillside above a small lake in the Smerkistown area, right on the border of County Cork and County Kerry. The site belongs to St Finbarr — St Finbarr of Cork, the city's patron saint. By tradition, he set up a hermitage here in the sixth century.

The stone oratory you see today stands on a small island in the lake, beside the cave old stories attribute to the saint. It dates from around 1700. That is when the priest Denis O’Mahony retreated to the island and built the structure that remains there now.

The setting does a lot of the work. There is the lake below, the mountains around, and a path that climbs steadily out of the forest and over the hillside. The place feels considerably older than it actually is.

Practical. Allow an hour up and down, plus time at the top. Free to visit. Best time: any day; summer for the light, winter for the atmosphere. The walk is a steady hill climb over grass and rock. Wear proper footwear, check the weather, and do not go in a gale. Dogs on leads. Getting there: by car: about an hour from Castletownbere or Kenmare; follow the signs for the Smerkistown area and then the waymarked path to the car park at the foot of the hill. There is no regular public transport; plan the day trip around it

Where to stay. Castletownbere (1h by car) — The classic base for the far west of the Iveragh; a good town with real choice. Kenmare (1h by car) — The bigger town on the Kerry side, at the other end of the peninsula.

Nearby, if the day runs long. Kinsale (Kinsale marks the southern terminus of the Wild Atlantic Way in County Cork.);

Save it if it is going on the list. The place page carries the map pin, access notes and the sources we checked — this post is the short read.
