The village
An Cloigeann translates to “the headland.” It sits in County Galway, 10 km northwest of Clifden. The village occupies the head of Cleggan Bay. Water fronts the settlement, while the headland rises behind it. Most visitors walk straight down to the shore first.
The pier anchors the local scene. Alexander Nimmo built it in 1822, and it was extended in 1908. Ferries leave daily for Inishbofin. There is also a service to Inishturk. Boats, ferries, and the water define the place. The islands remain the constant pull.
The name and the legend
The name An Cloigeann means head or skull. It refers to the coastal headland. The landform gave the village its identity. Walking to the top of Cleggan head offers a clear view of the harbour below.
Local lore offers another origin. St. Ceannanach was beheaded by a pagan chief. The chief carried the head to the Holy Well in Clooncree. He washed it there before lying down to die. The saint, the head, and the well form a second name for the village. The well in the townland is the specific location this story points to.
The position
Cleggan sits between Clifden and the far west. It marks the head of the bay. The coast road passes through the village, connecting Clifden to the Roundstone and Carna country. Ferries to the islands make it the main crossing point for the Cleggan Bay area. The village serves as a base for the bay and the islands. Mornings often start at the pier. Afternoons suit a walk to the headland. An island trip works well as a day out.
